By Ruby Ajilore Roses are red, grass is green and the patriarchy is most certainly alive and well. Although that last bit of information is something few would applaud (we hope), we must appreciate from time to time, just how far we’ve come. In 1933, Sigmund Freud publishes his theory titled “femininity”; it’s an attempt to dissect the psychology of cis-gendered homo-normative female sexuality. In this lofty text, Freud asserts that ‘penis envy’ is the name of the game when observing the fascinating whiles of femininity.
This jealousy of the supreme sexual pleasure attained by cis-men through their penises was seen as pretty much the basis for why women develop into whoever Freud thought they became. I call bull-spit. Karen Horney, a dope psychoanalyst who broke away from Freudian theory, and Sofí Gudiño, founder of the Inamorata Dance Collective do too. Listen to these two clip brought to you by ORI and VIBE105, as Sofi reflects on the POWER she takes from her feminine identity, and how she regularly challenges the remnants of Freud’s wack-ass theory. |
