Lil Nas X’s 2019 smash hit Old Town Road kick started his music career, followed by a lot of controversy surrounding the song and whether or not it belonged on the country charts. The controversy didn’t last too long though, because eventually he was backed by country superstar Billy Ray Cyrus, who hopped on the remix and made sure to let people know it was indeed a country song.
Fast forward to 2021, and Old Town Road has officially gone 14 times platinum, making it the most certified song in all of RIAA history. John Legend’s All of Me and Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber’s Despacito previously held the title for the most certified songs of all time, both going 13 times platinum, until Lil Nas X trotted on over.
Since its release, the song has broken quite a few records, including setting the record for the most week’s a number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 19 back-to-back appearances at the top in 2019.
Lil Nas X, who recently appeared on the cover of Paper Magazine, has made quite the name for himself since launching his career with Old Town Road, as a down to earth artist who never shies away from being himself. Although, he oftentimes faces criticism from other artists, such as Dave East, for doing so, he reminds himself that he had the number 1 song in the country for 19 weeks in 2019, so he could care less what others have to say.
Oh 2019…back when we could stand on couches in the club singing our hearts out to some good old Old Town Road.
