Injustice in various forms has been present in women’s lives for centuries. Whether it be inequalities surrounding gender, race, sexuality, or economic status, there has been, and continues to be, a systemic injustice that has often gone unnoticed or becomes underrepresented in society. Simply put, a feminist is someone who wants equality. Throughout various points in history in Canada and around the world, music has been one of the vessels that many women in particular have used to discuss issues of inequality and injustice. Whether you’re blasting Independent Women by Destiny’s Child or Girls Like Girls by Hayley Kiyoko, you have most likely heard a feminist-inspired anthem in your lifetime that has intersected music and empowerment to send out a message to its listeners.

Despite gendered inequalities that keep women under the leadership of men, more and more women are overcoming barriers in order to confidently accept leadership roles. Women are no longer willing to take a back seat. Among many of the professions that lack the representation of talented women, directing is still a profession dominated by men. |
