By Jillian Rago Tamia Hill remains a powerhouse in the world of R&B, amongst the up and coming young artists. She has worked with the biggest artists in the industry and continues to produce solid albums, year after year. Here are SEVEN things you didn’t know about Tamia. 1. She got her first big break in music featuring on Quincy Jones’ album Q’s Jook Joint. © Quincy Jones | YouTube Tamia and other artists were nominated for Grammy’s for their work on Q’s Jook Joint. Following that feature, she began working with other acts such as Missy Elliot and Chaka Khan. Her debut album was produced by the likes of Jermaine Dupri, who has worked with Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and Usher, to name a few. 2. In the album cut, Ashanti is featured in Fabolous’ hit song “So Into You” not Tamia. © YouTube Rapper Fabolous stated, in an interview with MTV News (2003) that Ashanti’s busy schedule was the reason they could not film the music video. “So Into You” spent six weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 and peaked at number 20. 3. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2003, the year her third studio album was set to release. © YouTube 2003 was a hard year for Tamia. Her husband was hospitalized after complications occurred with a surgery he had before. They had both overcome two serious health complications. Tamia and her husband continue to bring awareness to living with MS. 4. She is married to former NBA all-star Grant Hill The couple have been married for over 20 years and have two daughters, Myla and Lael Rose. Tamia also became a co-founder of the Tamia and Grant Hill Foundation. 5. She was a part of the 2004 Verizon Ladies First tour with Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliot. The tour was set to promote the albums of the female artists, including Tamia’s third album, More. Tamia opened for a majority of shows and received positive reviews for her performances. 6. She was born and raised in Windsor, ON. She is the eldest of her three siblings and was raised by her single mother. She began singing and playing the piano at an early age. She continued to develop her talent for much of her childhood and teenage years. 7. She is a six-time Grammy nominee And she is showing no signs of slowing down. Tamia released her sixth album, Love Life, in 2015 and she is already back in the studio working on her next. In an interview with You Know I Got Soul (2018) she says: “The music business has always been fickle, but it’s very quick now. Literally, a couple of months after I put out “Love Life”, they were like “When are you putting out the next album?” Through the many ups and downs life has thrown at her, Tamia stays on top of her game. She is a force to be reckoned with and we cannot wait to see what she has in store for 2019.
