By Kassandra Sharma Since their debut back in 1998, versatile virtual British band Gorillaz have created a lot of buzz on the music scene with their animated four-man act. The enticing group created music, videos and cartoon shorts that all took place in their own fictional universe, but have grown and developed to expand into a much more engaging concept since then. Since January, the band has been back at it with their periodic releases of new music that are part of their new episodic installment project dubbed Song Machine. The band teased that fans could expect more episode drops throughout the coming year with the first installment Momentary Bliss which was released on January 31, featuring rapper Slowthai and punk-rock duo Slaves. Up next came the second episode which was released on February 27, Désolé featuring Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara. © Gorillaz | YouTube The third and latest installment which was released in April is called Aries and features English singer/songwriter Georgiaand New Order’s Peter Hook. The live online release had a buzzing chatroom filled with excited fans, and a short PSA at the end from frontman 2D about staying safe and staying tuned for the next released, and oh yeah…wash your hands. © Gorillaz | YouTube So far, each song seems to deliver a melodic marriage between punk rock and indie rock with a dash of electronica for good measure, with the latest release adding a smooth serenading tempo to the mix. Teasers for the future episodes of this project include collaborations with other great acts such as Sampa the Great, ScHoolboy Q and Australia psychedelic rock producer Tame Impala, and as a fan I cannot wait to see where the foursome takes us next on this incredible journey.
