By Regena Ransome Chances are, you’ve heard of a rapper named Lil Nas X and a little song called Old Town Road. Kind of popular…it’s only got 314 million views on YouTube. The Billy Ray Cyrus featured song has been able to maintain its position at the top of the charts for seventeen weeks now, setting a new record in chart history. The previous record of sixteen weeks was held by two different songs. Those being, Mariah Carey and Boys II Men’s One Sweet Day and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's Despacito. A lot of Old Town Road’s success can be owed to internet memes, most specifically, the “Yee-Haw Agenda Meme”, where many would dress up in cowboy attire or post cowboy related content for their social media. Lil Nas X, being the internet savvy artist that he is, also posted his own memes, which would then later help it get picked up by Tik Tok users to re-create. Being removed from the country music genre on Billboard also likely helped it boost the songs notoriety. The track has seen remixes by Diplo, BTS, Mason Ramsey, Young Thug as well as potential remixes from Dolly Parton and Megan Thee Stallion. Lil Nas X decided to celebrate with a meme on Twitter. |
