Ahead of new album Son of Spergy, Daniel Caesar spoke to Billboard about the project, as well as being “canceled” in 2019 for defending influencer YesJulz with remarks that offended many of his Black fans.

“I was canceled for, you know, speaking my mind,” he tells the publication before rephrasing. “I was canceled for being drunk and foolish in public. But that was something I was always allowed to do. No one gave a sh*t [until I started to get famous].”

The original incident found the Canadian crooner defending the social media personality who has often been accused of cultural appropriation and insulting Black women, particularly Scottie Beam and entrepreneur Karen Civil, at the time. Julz also caught backlash for tweeting out a t-shirt that read, “Ni**as lie a lot.”

During a drunken rant, Caesar defended her and asked why Black people were being, “so mean to white people.”

“Why is that we’re allowed to be disrespectful and rude to everybody else and when anyone returns any type of energy to us…That’s not equality. I don’t want to be treated like I can’t take a joke.”

Acknowledging his drunkenness, he continued, insisting he was cognizant of his words. “People are allowed to say what the f**k they want. I’m allowed to feel what I want, but at the same time am I going to fight them or am I going to accept what they have to say and keep it f**king moving?”

Caesar previously apologized for the remarks, telling Apple Music’s Nadeska back in 2023, “I completely understand the response. And in time, after taking time to get over myself and to really honestly look at myself and everything that was happening, I was wrong. I was wrong, and I’m sorry about that. For a long time, I was like, ‘You can’t do anything, you can’t say anything without whatever.’”
