United Airlines is the first to update its policy to ban passengers who play audio or video without headphones.

The change was made to the airline’s contract of carriage on February 27th, adding a rule requiring passengers to use headphones when listening to audio or video content.

Passengers who fail to use headphones and cause any loss, damage, or expense to the airline are responsible for reimbursing the company for these losses.

United Airlines offers a free, basic wired pair of headphones to passengers who forget theirs.

United Airlines is the first major U.S. carrier to adopt a legally binding rule on headphone use on airplanes, while other airlines like Delta and Southwest also encourage headphone use but do not have it as a legally binding rule in their contracts of carriage.
