Kanye West Mother Honored with Street Name in Chicago

Kanye West returned home to Chicago on Tuesday to celebrate his late mother, Dr. Donda West, with a special street naming ceremony.

He personally unveiled the new “Dr. Donda West Way” street sign at 78th Street and South Shore Drive, the same area where their former home still stands.

Chicago Alderman Greg Mitchell praised her legacy during the event, calling her a “builder of people” and a “champion for Black creativity.”

Mitchell said her “impact stretches far beyond the block, far beyond Chicago, and far beyond her lifetime.”

Before her death in 2007 at age 58, she spent nearly 30 years teaching at Chicago State University and served as the chair of the English Department.

West was joined by several longtime friends and local artists to honor his mother’s lasting impact on students and children across the city.
