A spokesperson said Stewart died Wednesday in Los Angeles following a previously undisclosed battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Fans know him best as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek series.

However, Stewart spent most of his career performing on the stage and secured 3 Olivier Awards.

He also took home a 1996 Grammy Award for a spoken word album and earned a Tony Award nomination for his acclaimed performance in Macbeth.

Hugh Jackman shared a heartfelt tribute on social media and said, “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today.”

Stewart joined a drama group at age 12, and he later won a prestigious scholarship to launch an unforgettable career.
