In an advertisement for Suno, Blige expresses enthusiasm for AI-generated tracks, stating that while she initially struggled to grasp the concept, she finds the outcomes impressive.
The campaign has reignited debates about the role of AI in music, especially following rapper Tyga’s recent controversy regarding AI-assisted projects, which he defended as just another creative tool.
Prominent figures in the music industry like Dr. Dre and Timbaland support AI in music production, viewing it as an innovative tool, while Dre argues that skepticism often comes from those who struggle with creativity.
In contrast, SZA has publicly criticized AI music technology after discovering that 238 of her songs were used to train AI models, condemning artists who support such practices as “disgusting.”
Blige’s involvement with AI music also highlights ongoing discussions about consent, credit, and compensation in an industry adapting to new technology.
As the debate continues, Australia has taken a firm stance by prohibiting wholly AI-generated tracks from its charts and awards, requiring that human composers and performers be involved.
