Inuit’s and First Nations emerged well before the arrival of Europeans in Canada, while the Métis were born as a distinct cultural byproduct of the intermarriage between European settlers and First Nations people.
By Jillian Rago Filipino migrants first arrived in Canada as early as the 1930s. However, it was not until the 1990s that immigration from the Philippines increased rapidly.
Toronto has the highest population of Filipinos, for a major city, while Vancouver and Winnipeg have the second and third largest Filipino communities. Filipino culture is rooted in their value of the community. This is evident throughout many businesses, organizations, and events hosted in Toronto. By Carolina Salinas
The history of Asian immigration in Canada goes back to more than 150 ago, when Chinese workers arrived in the west coast to build the Pacific Railway in the mid-nineteenth century. These Asian Canadians not only contributed to building Canada physically, but also culturally, because they provided the country with a wide range of diversity and backgrounds. |
