Ruth E. Carter has made history as the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history across all categories.

She achieved this milestone after receiving her fifth Academy Award nomination for costume design on Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners.

Carter was previously tied with actress Viola Davis, who has four nominations.

This achievement places her alongside Spike Lee and Morgan Freeman as the third most-nominated Black creative in Oscar history.

Her previous nominations include Malcolm XAmistad, and both Black Panther movies.

Carter is already the only Black woman to win multiple Oscars in the costume design category.

The film Sinners also broke records with a total of 16 nominations, including nods for Best Picture and acting.

You can catch the Oscars live on ABC and Hulu on March 15th.
