Hollywood is mourning the loss of actor Eric Dane, best known as “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, who passed away Thursday at the age of 53.
Dane’s death follows a courageous 10-month battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after publicly sharing his diagnosis in April 2025.
In a statement, his family confirmed he passed away Thursday afternoon while surrounded by his friends, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
In their joint statement, his family shared, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.”
Beyond his iconic role as Dr. Mark Sloan, Dane earned critical acclaim more recently for his portrayal of the complex father Cal Jacobs on the HBO drama Euphoria.
Fans will have one final chance to see his work, as Dane reportedly filmed scenes for the upcoming third season of Euphoria while navigating his illness.
