“Maxxing” Is The 2026 Word Of The Year

Dictionary.com has officially crowned “maxxing” as its 2026 Word of the Year.

The trendy slang term is short for maximizing. People use it to describe optimizing any aspect of their life to the absolute fullest.

Internet users constantly attach the word to everyday activities. This practice produces popular new phrases like gymmaxxing, cozymaxxing, and sleepmaxxing.

The specific phrase “looksmaxxing” remains the most popular version of the trend. Media usage of that exact word jumped more than 1,000% since the start of the year.

The optimization trend beat out several other notable finalists for the top spot. The runner-up words included affordability, data center, Odyssey, and Unc.
