Judge Dismisses Major Copyright Claim By Reggae Legends Steely & Clevie Against Reggaeton Stars

Reggaeton artists just won a major legal victory after a federal judge dismissed a massive copyright lawsuit over the popular dembow rhythm.

The case claimed Steely & Clevie owned the rights to the beat, which appears in nearly 2,000 songs by more than 150 artists, including Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber.

Judge André Birotte Jr. reversed an earlier decision that would have sent the case to a lengthy trial.

He said the plaintiffs failed to establish valid claims and improperly combined elements from multiple tracks to create what he called a “Frankenstein copyright.”

The judge explained that U.S. copyright law does not protect a mere collection of similarities from different works.

The new ruling effectively ends large portions of the lawsuit against Bad Bunny and others.

Critics of the lawsuit said the case was an unfair attempt to monopolize an entire musical genre.
