Mary J. Blige has reflected on the lasting impact of a controversial 2012 Burger King commercial, which intended to promote chicken snack wraps but became a PR crisis due to backlash over racial stereotypes.
The ad, featuring Blige singing about the product, was pulled within days of its release as critics labeled it tone-deaf and insensitive, leading to severe public and media backlash.
Blige said that the aired version of the commercial did not meet her approval, as she had envisioned a different creative direction involving a dream sequence. She expressed understanding of her fans’ upset over the ad.
Burger King initially cited licensing issues for the ad’s early release, but later issued a public apology acknowledging that the ad went out without final approval.
