Mayor Of Toronto Announces “The Weeknd Weekend” As Abel Receives The Key To The City

Not only was this past weekend (July 26/27) proclaimed “The Weeknd Weekend” in the City of Toronto…But Scarborough’s own Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye received the key to the city from Mayor Olivia Chow in a private ceremony honoring his journey from local talent to global icon.

Beyond the music, he’s giving back by donating $500,000 to Scarborough health network during the covid-19 pandemic, championing Ethiopian studies at U of T. The Weeknd also co-founded HXOUSE, and now investing in youth programs at his former high school and the boys & girls club of west Scarborough

DJ Mel Boogie

Hailing from Toronto, DJ MelBoogie is one of Canada’s most renowned female DJs, with a career spanning over 30 years. Known for her contributions to community and music organizations, she made history as the DJ for the 2023 JUNO Awards’ tribute to 50 years of hip-hop, sharing the stage with Canadian icons like Kardinal Offishall, Michie Mee, and Choclair in a performance watched by 2.2 million viewers nationwide.

As chair of the JUNO Rap Advisory Board, MelBoogie has worked to amplify women’s voices in the industry. She also co-founded the Black Music Brunch with Maestro Fresh Wes, an annual event celebrating contributors to Black music in Canada.
