Merriam-Webster’s 12th edition of the Collegiate Dictionary has added over 5,000 new words.
Some of the more popular terms include “dumbphone,” “ghost kitchen,” “cold brew,” “farm-to-table,” “rizz,” “dad bod,” “hard pass,” “adulting,” and “cancel culture.”
All of the added words were already available on the M-W website.
So, is a printed dictionary still necessary in 2025? Merriam-Webster’s president said yes.
Greg Barlow emphasized the importance of print dictionaries. He explained, “While the print dictionary is not at all important to the growth and profitability of this wonderful language company, it’s still our heart.”
