By Akilah James (@ajxmes) Movember is an annual worldwide event that involves men growing out their moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health issues during the month of November. Last year, Movember raised $121.7 million and is the leading charity tackling mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer on a global scale. VIBE105 sat down with Shane Demerchant - Spokesperson - Movember Canada, to discuss FIVE ways you can participate in Movember. Grow a Moustache Move for Movember This one is for the fitness junkies. If you go for a run as a part of your daily routine, why not do it in the name of men’s health? During the last leg of the month, you can still run or walk 60km. “The number 60 is significant to Movember as it is dedicated to the 60 men that lose their life to suicide each hour across the world.” says Shane. Just sign up and let your feet do the talking. Here’s a guide provided which includes your “move tracker” that tracks the moves you make while ticking off your progress. The renewed lockdown is just another excuse to join in. Host a Mo-Ment In light of COVID-19, many everyday activities that we love have gone virtual. Shane says, “this year, more than ever people have adapted to the world of Zoom, Facetime and Google Hangouts and it has opened up some unique opportunities for people”. Movember is giving you the opportunity to host virtual events of your choice to raise awareness. You can host a talent show or scavenger hunt for example, and of course, Movember provides you with a guide on how to pull off the perfect event. Mo Your Own Way If you are a free-sprirt, out of the box type of person, “mo your own way” is perfect for you. “mo your own way is meant to challenge yourself to something entirely new in support of mens health,” says Shane. You can challenge yourself to stop a bad habit, take up a fitness challenge or even participate in a polar bear dip. Whatever it is, the donations you inspire will help bring awareness to men’s health. If you are struggling to think of your own challenge, this guide is perfect to how to mo your own way. Open up that Purse... or Man-Purse. If none of the above options suit your style, you can opt to donate to either a Mo Bro or Mo Sister’s efforts or make a donation straight to Movember. You can even choose to donate monthly, as men’s health issues are a year-long thing. With so many options to choose from, how will you participate in this year’s final leg of Movember? |
