By Yulia Federov Whether you decide to devour this book from cover to cover, or simply choose to scan its pages in search of that perfect piece of career advice you’re in need of, Careers AF! New Rules…New Tools… has you covered. It’s a book chock-full of concrete, thorough advice that will help you begin, advance or completely reroute your career. This handy guide covers everything from how to write up a cover letter that accurately and professionally conveys your intentions, to which jobs you should seek out and how to apply for them in a way which will maximize your chances of being hired. Author Michelle Nadon also covers how to behave during networking events in order to truly reap their benefits—and everything in between. “Careers AF! New Rules…New Tools… is a compilation of all of the work that I’ve done in both recruiting and executive coaching for the last sixteen years,” author M. Michelle Nadon explains. After breaking through the ranks in Canada’s media industry, and then starting her own successful recruiting firm, through which she has coached thousands of people through their various career road bumps, Nadon’s goal with Careers AF! is to provide all the coaching tools she has acquired, to as many people as possible. In her book, Nadon emphasizes the importance of taking control and having power over one’s career. No matter what age or stage one might be in their careers, she believes that through diligent and persistent effort, anyone can achieve success. How so? “It’s goal setting, it’s scheduling your goals once a week, and then it’s just being diligent about doing your career homework,” the author explains. While easier said than done, Nadon’s thorough, step-by-step instructions in Careers AF! make building a successful career seem truly possible. Her book, “takes the veil off the whole process, and it puts the power in the hands of the job seeker by way of goal setting and accountability.” Nadon believes that empowering people to take control of their lives, and their careers in particular, is the key to helping them feel fulfilled and active in their jobs and fields of work. “Instead of [a job seeker] going out there and throwing stuff at the wall and hoping something sticks, they can take their careers into their own hands and make much more targeted decisions, stronger branding around their name, and stronger articulation of what it is that they want, so that they could actually get what they want.” Although Careers AF! is intended to be for everyone at any stage in their careers, what I found to be most enlightening about this book is its applicability to the millennial generation. Nadon’s simple and organized writing style, and relatable written voice, make reading Careers AF! an enjoyable and educational experience for any reader. Although breaking into a career with little experience, starting one’s own business, or pursuing a promotion are never easy tasks, Nadon provides the reassurance that every 20-something (and likewise 30, 40, 50 and 60 something) needs as they enter the job market. “The advice that I give in my book is exactly how I have managed to work through Canadian media in the last twenty-five years,” Nadon affirms. “All of the information that I’ve gathered throughout the years has been compiled into that book.” For more information on M.
