Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, has passed away at the age of 111.
Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols praised Fletcher’s resilience and advocacy. Monroe said, “Mother Fletcher carried 111 years of truth, resilience, and grace and was a reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we must still go.”
Fletcher, a grandmother of six, recounted that she thought about the massacre every day and expressed that it was an unforgettable event in her life.
The Tulsa Race Massacre, which destroyed Tulsa’s Greenwood District, resulted in the deaths of at least 300 Black residents and left thousands homeless after a White mob attacked Black residents, looted businesses, and burned buildings.
Lessie Benningfield Randle, who is 111, is now the sole survivor of the Tulsa Massacre.
