The new series, a single-camera comedy consisting of 10 half-hour episodes, is being produced by showrunner Felicia Pride, with Debbie Allen returning as an executive producer and director for three episodes, including the premiere.
In a joint statement, Pride and Allen expressed their enthusiasm for the reunion, emphasizing the importance of respecting the original characters’ history while introducing storylines relevant to contemporary issues.
The plot centers on Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, who faces the challenge of stepping out of her parents’ legendary shadow during her freshman year at Hillman College.
Filming for the series is slated to take place in Atlanta from February 5 to April 27, although a release date has yet to be announced.
The revival follows the legacy of the original series, which aired from 1987 to 1993, and highlights the impact and significance of Black representation in television.
