By Apollo P Since Hip Hop stepped into the Y2K we saw the rise of the one hit wonders! This is part 1 of 4 of a run-down dedicated to some of the prolific one hit wonders of the past 17 years. Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 2000 : Black Rob – Whoa © Bad Boy Entertainment | YouTube Y2K didn’t happen, the dot com bubble busted, Tupac and Biggie have passed, and Hip Hop entered a new Level (Whoa). Black Rob starts off the list with his One Hit ‘Whoa’… This song had the clubs going up, allegedly. After his short lived fame, life got the best of him. Rob started robbing to get extra cash because apparently Bad Boy rarely paid their artists. His crimes eventually caught up to him in 2006 when he was charged with grand larceny and sentenced to 7 years in prison but was released in 2010 (Whoa!). A few years later he suffered from a stroke which inspired him to put down the Hennessey, the buffalo wings and the ridiculous lifestyle that he once thought was cool. He now lives a peaceful life being a father of two (WHOA!) 2001: Shaggy Ft Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent – It wasn’t me © Hasnainzoeb | YouTube Not only did this song promote infidelity, but it somehow cheated its way onto the charts as well. Back in 2001, Shaggy released his first and only Big Hit (that he still preforms to this day), which shot him into stardom. Who would have known that making a song about denying your cheating ways would capture the hearts of so many? After this one hit he was even nominated for Grammys (never won). His buzz eventually fizzled out and he went back into obscurity, never to be seen or heard from again. 2002 : Khai – My Neck, My Back (Lick It) © tanisharobinson66 | YouTube The year is 2002 and Khai has a break out single titled “My neck, My Back (lick it)”. This song was an embodiment of unscrupulous and unbecoming behaviour. Lets be honest, the hit being filled with sexually charged lyrics really made up for the lack of sex appeal that Khai was bringing to the music game. Khai wasn’t the ideal fantasy girl. As her music career began to sway to the waysides after this one hit wonder, she turned to media as her new endeavour. As of 2017 she hosts a weekly show with her friend where they gossip and participate in low taste behaviour. 2003 : Bone Crusher Ft Killer Mike & T.I – Never Scared © AsylumRecordsTV | YouTube Bone crusher came on the music scene like a flash in the pan! At the age of 32 (during this time) he really didn’t have longevity, in retrospect. The single reached #26 on the hot 100 charts. The song was named the theme of the Atlanta Braves and his remix version was on madden 2004. As of right now he is a washed up rapper in his 40’s. To be honest no one cares. 2004 : Petey Pablo – Freak-A-Leak © PeteyPabloVevo | YouTube Petey Pablo was the notorious armed kleptomaniac before his one hit wonder. After serving 5 years for armed robbery in 1993, Petey Pablo got a second chance at life when he was signed to Jive Records. His album was nominated for a Grammy in the category of ‘Best Rap Album’, but Petey lost to the greatest white rapper of all times, Eminem. Petey began to work on his second album: ‘Still Writing In My Dairy: 2nd Entry’. Little did he know that he was about to climax in the music industry. Petey’s second album received both critical acclaim and commercial success. However, he knew that he didn’t have what it takes to maintain his mainstream success. So he took a hiatus from music (don’t ever make the mistake of leaving when you are hot). He tried to make his return to music but nobody was messing with him. As of right now he has his own independent label and releases music via sound cloud.
